ELLICOTTVILLE — Despite its game needing to be paused on Sept. 6 due to poor weather conditions, Franklinville/Ellicottville secured a 35-14 season-opening win over Cleveland Hill.
The Titans (1-0) held a narrow eight-point lead at the time the game was put on pause. However, they picked up right where they had left off on Saturday and cruised to a 35-14 win. Four different players found the endzone for F/E, led by running back Carter Smith who scored twice and picked up 60 yards.
Through the air, quarterback Isaac Towne (11 completions, 222 yards three touchdowns, interception) connected with Matthew Spittler (three catches for 85 yards), Bretton Blecha (five for 82 yards) and Billy Slavinski (one catch for 21 yards) for one touchdown apiece.
“I am extremely proud of my players’ ability to come back today focused and play as well as they did,” F/E coach Justin Tatlow. “Hats off to Cleveland Hill for making the trip down two days in-a-row and playing as tough as they did. That is not an easy task with the miles they logged between Friday evening and Saturday morning. There were the typical first game mistakes, but overall, I am very proud of the fight and grit that my team showed.”
Eden/North Collins 44, Cattaraugus-Little Valley 24CATTARAUGUS — In a game started on Sept. 6 and resumed Saturday afternoon in the third quarter, Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-1) racked up 232 rushing yards on 39 carries but lost its season opener.
CLV lost to Eden- North Collins by the score of 44-24. The game was played in Cattaraugus on Friday night and resumed Saturday afternoon. CLV rushed for 232 yards on 39 carries.
Dylan Swanson led CLV with 80 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while quarterback DJ Szata went 7-of-9 passing for 87 yards. Szata added two rushing touchdowns.
CLV scored three touchdowns and two-point conversions for all three.
Turnovers derailed the T-Wolves early, with two fumbles inside Eden’s 10-yard line in the first quarter.
“We had some growing pains with a very young team but battled throughout the game” noted first-year CLV coach Mark Benton.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove 27, Randolph 17FALCONER — At the time Randolph’s season-opener on Sept. 6 had to be postponed until the next day due to weather, it held a 14-7 advantage.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals (0-1), when the game resumed play on Saturday, they saw that lead swiped away from them after Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
For Randolph, both touchdowns it scored were recorded in the first quarter. One, an 87-yard kick return by Alex Garland, the other scored on the ground by Kevin McElwain (50 rushing yards).
The only other points the Cardinals managed to come up with was via a 39-yard third-quarter field goal from Griffin Nelson.
BOYS SOCCERJamestown 6, Salamanca/ Cattaraugus-Little Valley 0JAMESTOWN — Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley goalkeeper Carter Light, a sophomore, made 13 saves in a season-opening loss on Sept. 7.
“We showed significant improvement on the field from our first day of practice and have high hopes and aspirations for the rest of the season,” Salamanca coach Marra Stokes said. “Every single athlete showed up today and worked through the weather and tough opponent. … There is always something positive to take away from each game, win or lose, and our athletes kept a very positive mindset and have big goals for the rest of the season.”
GIRLS SOCCEREllicottville 2, Fredonia 1ELLICOTTVILLE — Ellicottville won a season-opening game on Sept. 7, powered by goals from Drew Ficek and Addi John.
Bianca Bush and Katie Bless picked up assists for the Eagles.
Courtney Marsh made 21 saves in the win.
Haylee Babar scored the goal for Fredonia, while Naomi Muck had 16 saves.
Westfield/Brocton, 4, Franklinville 0WESTFIELD — Westfield/Brocton took the lead with two seconds remaining in the first half and held on until putting the Sept. 7 matchup away with three goals in the final 13 minutes of the second half.
Avery Swank scored twice for W/B. Colie Bundy made three saves in a shutout.
For Franklinville, Taylor Chase made six saves.
“They got three then as our girls simply ran out of gas,” said Franklinville coach Tim Wangelin, whose team only had one available substitute. “Strong play for us from Molly Witter, Nadia Bowers, Addie Killingbeck, Alayna Spittler, Addie Chamberlain and Mya Sullivan.”
Eden 0, Salamanca 0, OTSALAMANCA — Salamanca (0-1-1) was held off the scoreboard, but improved on its season-opening loss by forcing a tie with Eden on Sept. 7.
Goalkeeper Myla Galante earned a shutout in front of the net and “played an amazing game,” coach Kersten Furlong noted.

Cattaraugus-Little Valley 1SILVER CREEK — Candice Brown scored off a Talon Bramer assist for Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-1) in a season-opening loss on Sept. 6.
Kierra Knobloch made 10 saves for the Timberwolves.
Port Allegany/Smethport 4, Salamanca 1SALAMANCA — While the scoreline may not have shown it, the Salamanca girls soccer team and its coaching staff have been filled with positivity after its season opener on Sept. 4.
Despite their best efforts to contain the speedy attack of their opposition, the Warriors ultimately fell 4-1 to the combined Port Allegany/Smethport team in the first game of the Andrea Morton Memorial Tournament. Salamanca coach Kersten Furlong put the score in perspective, hailing her team’s dedication, versatility and positive attitudes on the field.
“Am I disappointed we lost? Heck, yeah. But … I think we had more shots in today’s game than we had all last season,” Furlong said. “So, I am not taking it as a true loss. We have so many positives that came from today: people that played new positions today for the first time, people that played varsity for the first time. So, we are only going to move forward from this.”
Port Allegany/Smethport’s Kailey Bartlett broke the deadlock with a first-half free kick before Ellie Yeager netted the brace a few minutes later. The latter of the two went on to complete her hattrick after scoring both Port Allegany/Smethport goals in the second half before picking up an injury. Kylee Pelchy and Bartlett each picked up assists on the night for the visitors
As for Salamanca, Arleigh Chudy got the Warriors off the blocks for the season after slotting home from the penalty spot.
In goal, Port Allegany/Smethport’s Hannah Taylor recorded seven saves while Salamanca’s Myla Galante finished with nine.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALLNorth Collins 3, West Valley/Franklinville 0NORTH COLLINS — West Valley/Franklinville fell to North Collins in three sets 25-11, 25-15, 25-21 on Sept. 9.
Leading West Valley/Franklinville (0-3), Makenzie Chase had four kills and four aces, Alexis Miller had six digs and Jersie Czapla had four aces.
Cattaraugus-Little Valley 3, Forestville 0CATTARAUGUS — Cattaraugus-Little Valley (2-0) grabbed a three-set sweep over Forestville on Sept. 9, 25-17, 25-19, 25-13.
Maddie Rogan had six aces and 13 digs for the T-Wolves, while Carly Preston had nine digs, seven kills and three blocks and Riley Preston added seven kills.
Brocton 3, West Valley/ Franklinville 0BROCTON — Brocton denied visiting West Valley/Franklinville in three sets, 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 on Sept. 6.
For WV/Franklinville, Makenzie Chase had two aces, two blocks and two kills while Payton Ehnes had two aces, a block and a dig. Karly Otto added four digs, Alexis Miller had five digs and Elizabeth Price marked one kill.
Ellicottville 3, Springville 1SPRINGVILLE — On Sept. 4, Ellicottville shook off a first-set loss to win its season-opening match on the road, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19.
Riley Whitmer (11 kills, two blocks) and Hayden Andera (12 kills, two aces) led the Eagles to the win, while Ande Northrup dished out 25 assists with four aces. Natalee Leiper chipped in with seven kills and 12 digs.
“This was a great starting point to kick off our season,” Eagles coach Katie Auge said.
CROSS COUNTRYFor the first time since 1995, Salamanca had a boys cross country team score as a team at a Meet thanks to Jaxon Crouse, Aiden George, Chad Hill Jr. Preston Smith, and Messiah Ground.
For four of the five boys racers, it was their first ever varsity race and three had never ran a cross country race.
Jaxson Crouse was the first Salamanca runner to cross the finish line with a time of 19:55. He was followed by Aiden George (21:09), Chad Hill Jr. (23:47), Preston Smith (25:36) and Messiah Ground (27:02).
In the girls race, Ryanna Brady finished fifth of 119 runners in the small schools race. First time runner Kaylin Lemon finished in 77th with a time of 27:01.
SWIM AND DIVESalamanca 97, Allegany-Limestone 81SALAMANCA — While Allegany-Limestone won eight of the 12 events, Salamanca battled for points in second through fifth places to claim the victory on Sept. 9.
Mikaela Tennity was a double-winner for the Warriors (2-0), taking the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Also claiming wins were Kynleigh Wass (100 freestyle) and the 400 freestyle relay team (Juliana Smith, Wass, Charli Ross, Tennity).
For A-L, Lauryn Ball (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Sienna Nagel (100 butterfly, 500 freestyle) were double-winners for A-L. Sammi Vecchio (200 IM) and Melody Hayes (diving) won one event each and the Gators won two relays, the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay with Ball, Vecchio and Zoey Bush swimming on both (along with Nagel on the medley and Cameryn Slevinski on the freestyle).

Franklinville 41SALAMANCA — In Franklinville’s first meet as its own girls swimming and diving program in more than a decade, the Panthers fell on the road to Salamanca on Sept. 5.
The Warriors won 126-41.
Mikaela Tennity (100 IM, 100 butterfly) and Addison Follman (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) were double-winners for the Warriors. Grabbing one win each were Charli Ross (50 freestyle), Kynleigh Wass (200 freestyle) and Gabriella Bly (diving).
Of Tennity, Warriors coach Laurie Lafferty-John said, “I can see she is on a mission this season and her times are already close to last year.”
On Follman, she added, “She took a year off to play soccer last season but we are thrilled to have her back and she is hungry.”
For Franklinville, Kayci Landow won the 500 freestyle and Diana Li won the 100 breaststroke. Panthers swimmers had previously swam in Olean, but this year they had enough numbers to restart the Franklinville team.
“I think you are going to see Coach Herman grow that program back to its glory days,” Lafferty-John said of the Panthers. “As an Alumni swimmer from Franklinville it creates a lot of pride to see the program coming back home and for these girls trying to establish an interest.”
GIRLS TENNISJamestown 4, Salamanca 1JAMESTOWN — Jasmine Smith won her first singles match in three sets, 6-3, 3-6-, 6-3 in a Sept. 9 loss to Jamestown.
Jamestown won the other four matches to claim the team victory, with Onnalee Nellis and Jolee Schultz taking second and third singles in straight sets.
“Although shorthanded, the girls played tough and battled for points during many back and forth games,” Warriors coach Joe Hinman noted. “Senior Jasmine Smith picked up her first career singles win at first singles in an exciting 2-1 deciding match.”
