WILSON — The Salamanca High School track and field teams earned four Section 6 Class C individual championships between three athletes on Friday, including two throwing victories by senior Jillian Rea.
Rea won the girls’ shot put and discus, with throws of 32-feet-5-inches and 95-feet-1-inch, respectively. It was Rea’s third and final shot put throw that lifted her over the competition for the sectional title. Her discus cleared the competition by nine feet.
“We have been so proud of how Jill has learned to keep her composure in the face of adversity,” coach Laurie Lafferty-John said. “Coach Gene Oyer says has the capability of throwing over 100 and she has in warmups and throws. It will be exciting watching her put it together next week.”
Teammate Harley Brown, a junior, won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.58.
“She has a hard time believing she is running so well but we don’t,” Lafferty-John said. “Harley is one of the team’s hardest workers and has the determination of a champion. It’s been just awesome watching her confidence grow this season and how she inspires and leads her teammates.”
Rea and Brown helped lead the Salamanca girls to fifth out of 12 teams in the meet.
Sophomore Arlen Newark led the Salamanca boys (10th of 13 teams), winning the 400-meter dash in a time of :51.93. Newark rested in the county meet last week due to a hamstring strain but came back strong.
Also x the Salamanca girls, Ryanna Brady was third in the 2000 steeplechase (8:38.45) and sixth in the 800 (2:45.12), while Kamryn DeBoy fourth in pole vault (6-6), eighth in the 400 hurdles and ninth in the high jump. Brown was also seventh in the 100 hurdles.
Alina Cook took fifth in the discus (81-6). Gabrielle Bly was fifth in the 2000 steeplechase (9:08.99) and seventh in the 1500. Michaelynn Lecceradone was eighth in the 100 hurdles, 10th in three events: 400 hurdles, long jump and triple jump.
Salamanca’s 3200 relay (Brady, Sierra Haynoski, Brown, Aliyah Lee) took third in a time of 11:38.95, while DeBoy, Brown, Summer Downey and Haynoski were seventh in the 1600 relay.
For the Salamanca boys, the 1600 relay of Jorden Ambuske, Jason McGraw, Jesse Hill and Arlen Newark finished fourth at 3:41.9. Archer Newark had to miss the race due to an injury earlier in the meet, so Ambuske stepped in as an alternate.
Hill was seventh in the 400, Taylor Hayes eighth in the 3200 and Archer Newark ninth in the 100.
The 400 relay team (Jorden Ambuske, Archer Newark, Jason McGraw, Arlen Newark) took sixth.
