SALAMANCA — Contests for the mayorship and in two city wards will be on the ballot in Salamanca as Election Day draws closer and voters head to the polls.
The 2020 General Election will be held on Nov. 3, with polling stations across Cattaraugus County open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
In the city’s mayoral race, Democratic candidate Sandra Magiera, the current Ward 4 alderwoman, will face Republican Ronald Ball, former mayor in 2015-16.
After two consecutive two-year terms, sitting Mayor Michael R. Smith did not seek reelection.
Running unopposed for the council are Ward 1 incumbent John “Jack” Hill, a Democrat; Ward 2 candidate Kylee Johnson, a Democrat; and Ward 3 candidate Barry Smith, an independent.
Ward 2 alderman Tim Flanigan and Ward 3 alderman Michael Lonto did not seek reelection. Flanigan and Lonto have both served three consecutive two-year terms.
In Ward 4, newcomer Paul Myers, the Democratic candidate, will face the ward’s former alderman Gary Wind, the Republican.
In Ward 5, newcomer Kenneth “Skip” Nary, an independent, will challenge incumbent Janet Koch, the Democratic candidate.
Also on the ballot in Salamanca are two Cattaraugus County positions.
Bradley M. Spink is running unopposed for County Coroner on the Republican Party line. Matthew J. Keller is running unopposed for County Treasurer on the Republican and Conservative party lines.
Early voting will be open in two locations in Cattaraugus County, the Cattaraugus County Board of Election office and Jamestown Community College, Cutco Building, Olean. Any registered voter in Cattaraugus County is able to vote in person at the early voting center of their choice.
Remaining hours for early voting are:
• Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will be no early voting Nov. 2, the day before the election.
Voters may only vote early in their home county, but residents of Cattaraugus County may vote at either station. No appointment is necessary, but under state executive order, face masks are required.
Those heading to the polls may only vote once — by voting early, voting the day of the election at their regular polling station, or by absentee ballot. Electronic poll books linking the early voting and regular voting stations will be used to prevent multiple votes, and an absentee ballot received from someone who voted in person will not be counted.
