STEAMBURG — A Steamburg man was arrested Dec. 27 after reportedly making false statements to authorities that his truck was stolen.
New York State Police said that Matthew Mansfield, 26, of Steamburg, called 911 on Dec. 23 to report his truck was stolen from his property and signed a deposition requesting that the responsible person for the theft be arrested.
State police alleged that evidence at the scene where Mansfield’s truck was recovered, as well as witness interviews, revealed that the truck had not been stolen. Instead, police allege that Mansfield’s truck malfunctioned while he was driving it and that when he couldn’t get it restarted, he walked home.
Mansfield was charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and making a punishable false written statement. Since he allegedly already had two active suspensions on his license, he was also charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Mansfield was issued appearance and traffic tickets and is due in Cold Spring Town Court next month.
