SALAMANCA — The Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce presented their final Summer Concert in Jefferson Street Park on Aug. 26 with local musicians, the Lindsay Brown Band.
The band consists of David Jones on keyboard and bass, Noah Gillman on lead guitar, Terry Davis on drums and the band’s vocalist Lindsay Brown, who also plays the saxophone.
The band played a varied selection of what they call “Rootsie Rock and Roll” that appealed to the mixed audience of just shy of 100 people congregated at the park. It was said to be one of the largest crowds of the summer.
“We were supposed to play four weeks ago, but got rained out,” said Jones.
The band set up not in the gazebo, but in the front right corner of the park.
“We wanted to be closer to the audience,” Gillman said.
The closeness added informality to the performance, and people could be seen tapping their feet to songs such as “Mack the Knife,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Take Me To The River” and “Norwegian Wood.”
Davis said the group has been playing together for several years and “sort of organized itself.” He offered a place where they could practice, at the Alliance Community Church in Kill Buck, where he is the pastor.
How long has he been playing drums? “Too long,” he joked.
“We have a drum set in our living room,” said his wife, Anne. “That’s OK.”
Jones has been playing keyboard for 55 years. He retired from Luminite and now has more time for his music, including bass guitar.
Gillman not only plays lead guitar but mandolin and banjo as well. He and his three sons have turned their living room into a music room where they all enjoy making music together.
Gillman met Brown at Allegany State Park, where they both work.
Brown supervises the road crew and, despite her small stature, operates the big machinery as easily as the men.
She started out as group vocalist and only admitted that she could play the saxophone a few months ago. Needless to say, her fellow band members were impressed — not to mention surprised — and they have redesigned their repertoire to include her instrumental, as well as her vocal abilities.
Members of the Lindsay Brown Band said they hoped to provide an evening of music that was not only enjoyable but “a little bit different.”
Those who heard them are likely to agree that they were a success.
