OLEAN — Cattaraugus-Little Valley teammates Daniel Taapken and Jacob Goodenow, playing in the first group at the CCAA Div. III boys golf sectional qualifier, each carded a 91 Monday at Bartlett Country Club.
The identical 18-hole scores sent the T-Wolves’ top two golfers to a playoff, where Goodenow won on the third hole to claim the medalist honor. Taapken and Goodenow parred the first two holes, but Goodenow took advantage of his teammate’s third-hole bogey to win the tournament on a par.
“It was a fun day,” said C-LV coach Ken Wright. “Those two guys have golfed with each other all year long and they have gone back and forth all year long and this just is another match (where) one of them took it, the other one had to sit back and accept it. I knew when they went out there it was going to be a long bus ride home.”
That kind of competitiveness has been evident all season, Wright said.
“From what I’ve seen all year, they want to beat each other every single time they go out,” he noted. “They will come to school the next day and one will be upset and the other … it is what it is. They’re the best two golfers in the league and it showed today.”
The division’s seven best scores, including three golfers each for C-LV and Salamanca and one from Randolph, on Monday qualified for the Section 6 championships Monday, May 21, at River Oaks Golf Club on Grand Island.
For Salamanca, Braden Siebert took third with a 94, Jarrett Pond tied for fourth with Randolph’s Branson Morrison at 96 and Brandon Milanowski sixth with a 97.
C-LV’s Ben Grube finished seventh with a 97 to claim the final sectional qualifying spot. Allegany-Limestone’s Michael Davis carded a 100 to earn an alternate spot.
“Course conditions were difficult and the coaches expected higher scores,” Salamanca coach Gene Jankowski said. “The back side of the course was quite wet from the rain over the weekend. The kids played the ball down, meaning they were not allowed to clean the ball even if there was a clump of mud on it.”
Wright echoed Jankowski’s opinion of the wet course conditions, which brought scores higher than normal.
“We started out at 9 o’clock and it was wet, it was sloppy, so what they shot, it was fine,” he said. “The other day they would have been down there where they normally were but today, the conditions were awful so they did well.”
