SALAMANCA — Salamanca City Police officers made several traffic stops on Friday, Nov. 17 — but the drivers continued on their way not with tickets, but with smiles on their faces.
As Mayor Mike “Smitty” Smith said, “We were charging citizens with ‘Thankfulness in the third degree’ and presenting each person charged with a Thanksgiving turkey, courtesy of the SPD’s Shop With a Cop program.”
Sgt. Cale Benjamin and Lt. Tina Owens were on “bird duty” and apprehended several folks, sending them on their way with the turkeys.
Smith said the day’s stops and donations were part of the city’s ongoing efforts to reach out and generate positive civic spirit, while also raising awareness of the Shop With a Cop program. He said Shop With a Cop helps area disadvantaged youth with their Christmas shopping.
