RED HOUSE — A Cattaraugus man was recognized Tuesday, Dec. 11 by the Allegany Region Commission for raising thousands of dollars to paint cabins in Allegany State Park — then getting young people to paint them.
Rick Feuz, a teacher at Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School, has been coming to Allegany State Park since he was 10 years old. For the past eight years, he’s been a volunteer instrumental in getting dozens of cabins painted in the familiar “Allegany green.”
Feuz showed a wood burning and carving he did of the Thomas Kelly Covered Bridge to members of the Allegany Region Commission, as well as photos of some of the Cattaraugus-Little Valley students and Boy Scouts who have helped paint cabins in the state park.
He raffles the wood-burnings off at park events like Thursday night Hootenannies with Sally Marsh during summer months and the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage. He’s made deals with Sherwin Williams Paints to make the donations go farther.
And during one week this year, Sherwin Williams employees and volunteers painted 24 cabins in the Quaker area. Feuz’ students painted the mess hall and classroom building at Camp Allegany this past summer.
